VOTING RIGHTS

This information refers to the right to vote of UK nationals residing in Portugal in 2021 Local Elections.

Do UK nationals residing in Portugal hold the right to vote in all national elections?


No.

UK nationals who are officially residing in Portugal will be able to vote in local elections, such as: Town Hall Elections (Câmara Municipal); Municipal Assembly Elections (Assembleia Municipal) and Parish Council Assembly Elections (Assembleia de Freguesia).




Who can vote in the 2021 Local Elections?


UK nationals who officially resided in Portugal before Brexit day (31st January 2020) and:

  • Are holders of a valid residence permit; and
  • Are enrolled in the Portuguese electoral system through registration with the Parish Council of the area of residence of their residence permit.

Please note that, UK nationals who are not yet official residents may exercise their right to vote after completing more than three (3) years of legal residence in Portugal. For more information, please read the legislation (in Portuguese) > here




How do I register to vote in Portugal?


You should register to vote in the Portuguese electoral system in the Parish Council of the area of residence of your residence permit.




What documents are necessary to register to vote in 2021 Portuguese Local Elections?


UK nationals who officially reside in Portugal since before the 31st of January 2020 should enroll in the Portuguese electoral system by registering with the Parish Council of their permit’s area of residence and present the following documents:

- Residence document; - Residence Permit Application Certificate (Certificate with the QR Code); - Valid Passport.




When is it possible to register to vote?


Up to 60 days before election day. As 2021 Portuguese Local Elections are scheduled for the 26th of September, you had until the 27th of July to do so. In case you have not registered until this date, you will only be able to register for the next electoral cycle.





*Please note that whenever you change your address, you must update it at your local Parish Council. If you acquire Portuguese nationality, your registration is automatic and you do not need to register and/or change your address at the Parish Council.
