UK nationals who are officially residents in Portugal should access the Mobility and Land Transports Institute (IMT) online portal here and:

a) Register their UK driving licence within 60 days from the date of issue of the residence document, or;

b) Exchange their UK driving licence within 90 days from the date of issue of the residence document.

In any case, please note that the recognition of UK driving licences is in effect until the end of 2021 and therefore residents UK nationals should exchange their valid UK driving licences for one issued by the Portuguese authorities by the 31st of December 2021.

In the event that your UK driving licence has expired, been lost or stolen, you must exchange the document for one issued by the Portuguese authorities.

Future agreements for the recognition and exchange of UK driving licenses are still being discussed between the Portuguese and UK governments.

Please note that:

  • UK nationals can exchange an expired UK driving licence for up to two (2) years after the expiration date but will not be able to drive without a valid document.

  • When exchanging your UK driving licence for one issued by the Portuguese authorities, UK nationals will have to pass a Portuguese driving test.
