RESIDENCY RIGHTS

The Withdrawal Agreement enables UK nationals, as well as their family members, to continue to exercise their rights derived from EU law in Portugal, as long as they remain residents in Portugal. UK nationals who were living in Portugal before the end of the transition period are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement.

UK nationals, as well as their family members, may continue to live, work or study in Portugal as before.

What does it mean to be “protected by the Withdrawal Agreement”?

The Withdrawal Agreement is an international agreement between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) and it sets out the terms of the UK´s withdrawal from the EU.

In what concerns residency, this agreement guarantees that UK nationals who were living in EU countries before the end of the transition period will be able to continue to enjoy their residence rights as before.

If you did not register before the 31st of December 2020, you will continue to be able to do so under the Withdrawal Agreement. Please keep all documents for future reference and proof that you were already living in Portugal before the end of the transition period.

More information on this at: “UK Nationals not Registered as Residents” under the “Registering for Residence for those under the Withdrawal Agreement”.

Please note that the regularisation process for UK nationals who move to Portugal from 1st January 2021 onwards, will fall under the legislation covering third-country nationals.
